The Statesmen Chorus is in search of director. |
Responsibilites |
- Thorough preparation for each chorus rehearsal held weekly. (Rehearsals are currently Thursday evenings from 7 to 9:30 PM at John Wesley Methodist Church, 5830 Bermuda Dunes Dr Houston, TX 77069).
- Support a vision developed in conjunction with the music team.
- Provide training and guidance which will help members grow as singers and performers.
- Work with the music team to audition, accept or reject prospective chorus members on a musical basis.
- Attend all weekly and special rehearsals of the chorus.
- Direct performances and scheduled engagements.
- Participate in Barbershop Harmony Society training sessions for music directors as approved by board.

Supervision |
- The director is supported and advised by the chorus board of directors who are elected annually.

Qualifications |
- The director candidate should have or be seeking a music degree or have extensive experience; barbershop experience or training is desired. A background working with quartets is also relevant.
- Interpersonal skills: Music directors should have experience working with musicians, singers, and performers. Being respectful and friendly are important assets for the position when working with volunteer musicians. The successful candidate must be open to accepting and providing praise and constructive criticism.
- Leadership: Guide singers by setting up/offering interpretation of musical arrangements and helping individuals achieve the best sound and performance possible.
- Promotional skills: Music directors are expected to assist and encourage the chorus in recruiting membership and promoting chorus performances via social media, word of mouth and with local communities.

Compensation and Education |
- The chorus anticipates that the director will want to learn all that is available to develop and enhance their skills. Therefore, the director should be willing to attend training classes and seminars, some provided by the Society, that will increase their knowledge of this music genre. This training will be approved and paid for by the chorus.
- Compensation is negotiable and will be based on experience as well as potential future growth. In addition, expenses for International, district, and chapter dues are covered by the chapter. Necessary travel and accommodations for chorus events, and director's unforms required, will be covered by the chapter. Details of salary and of covered expenses will be itemized in the Musical Director's contract agreement.

We have moved!

When The Statesmen Chorus returned to in-person rehearsals late in 2021, we moved to the choir room at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 5830 Bermuda Dunes Dr, Houston, TX 77069. Bermuda Dunes is just off Champion Forest a couple blocks north of FM 1960 (Cypress Creek Parkway). The choir room is located on the second floor of the administration building. |
